Longsha campsite, Monsoon, cleanups and helping hands

We extend a big thank you to all the friends, family, guests/volunteers who have helped over the years clear up the campsite year on year and Kapas Island.

Round island cleanups (by boat to the back of the island) always occur after the monsoon season ends. They continue throughout the year to manage rubbish collecting around the back of the island and along the front shoreline.

During the season the island staff work hard to clean the front of the island every morning taking and removing all rubbish off the island and back to the mainland, reducing on any landfill.

Sadly due to human waste, the front of island still can become littered very quickly, so cleanups happen regularly through out the season to try and stay on top of keeping Kapas island beautiful.

If you have a group or want to help contribute to Island clean ups, ask staff at Longsha, KBC or at any other accomadation, and they will point you in the right direction.

Below is some examples of round the back of Island cleanups initiated before the conservation group started.

Mother Nature can cause a lot of damage in the monsoon. It’s always a nice surprise to see when nothing much has been damaged.

It takes about a good week to clean up all the leaves and rubbish collected around the campsite. This allows the sun to reach the sand. The sand needs to dry out from the monsoon rains, preparing it for the new season.

Sometimes the damage gives an opportunity to change things and rebuild. Other times, it’s just simply repairing the damage and doing a good clean up.

Before and after jet washing the toilets, this happens every monsoon. Ready for repainting.

Many things are collected and washed into Kapas island during Monsoon waves.

Below is an example of land that breaks of from the mainland and somehow ends up on the island. It can be very difficult to remove once the high tides have stopped coming.

Eventually the land is cleaned and ready for the season.
